Mont Eco Nature Reserve - Oct 2009

We spent a couple days at Steve's Farm which was very enjoyable and great fun.
We went on a game drive like the one in the photo.
Steve went out of his way to make our stay a great pleasure
Thanks Steve

Snake Eagle

On the way to Mont Eco Nature Reserve, we saw a rare site.
A Snakle eagle, like the one in this picture taken from Roberts Book of Birds, picked a Puff Adder from the road just in front of us and took it to near by tree to eat it.
It all happened in a matter of seconds.

Paco - Steve's Dog

This is Paco posing and relaxing in the chair. He stayed at our chalet for the night but left early in the morning to go to Steve's house for breakfast

Mont Eco Game and Nature Farm - Hiking Trail

On Monday 5th October 2009 we went on a hikingh trail through the Little Karoo bush and identified various trees and shrubs.
Some tree species were used by the San as "Muti"- medicine

Mont Eco Farm

We had a fantastic fry up in Howard's "Volcano"
This was after going for a one and half hours walk with Steve as our Leader. He set a craking pace but we stopped to look at shrubs and trees along the route.

Paco - A Jock of the Bush Dog

This is delightful Paco who went chasing the birds in one of the Dams on the farm and then got very cold. He was shivering and we tried to capture him on video but it did not really work out.

The Start of Boesmanskloof Hiking Trail

This is the sign which marks the Trail. It quite restrictive and you are only allowed to hike and smile.
Our route went from McGregor to Greyton and we took it easy

The top of Boesmanskloof Hiking Trail

This was taken at 07.00 hrs on Saturday 3rd October 2009 and we are reday toi tackle the hike after a hectic night before at the Green Gables in McGregor.
It was misty, as you can see, and cool.
From the left - Dave and Jessy -our hosts in McGregor, Geoff, Howard and Caldow.
There are chalets here where you can sleep over

This video was taken at the top of the hike and from it was down hill

Boekmanskloof Hiking Trail - 3rd October 2009

These yellow flower bushes were found all along the route.
Once again the colouring was so sharp comsidering the harsh conditions.
I am not sure of the name of the bush which stands about waist high

Boekmanskloof Hiking Trail - 3rd October 2009

About three quarters up the page you can see the path down to Greyton. Below the path is a steep drop. You can also see the mountain has been cut away to create a path.
It was spectacular down the valley

Boekmanskloof Hiking Trail - 3rd October 2009

This pic was taken early in the morning pointing towards Greyton.
It was quite cold and mist covered most of the mountain

Boesmanskloof Hiking Trail - October 2009

This is waterfall that fills up the pool at the halfway mark.
We had our halfway stop at the ridge of the waterfall and it was very pleasant.
There were some other hikers having a swim but they said it was very cold. A good place during the height of summer

This is a better photo of the pool

This is the first big pool and it is about half way

It is about half way

Boekmanskloof Hiking Trail - 3rd October 2009

There were lots of these daises along the route with some of them growing out of the rocks.
The colouring was blinding

Boekmanskloof Hiking Trail - 3rd October 2009

The mountains were full of wild flowers like these ones but we were too late for the Proteas. You need to do this hike in September to see Proteas

Drinks in Greyton after a tough 6.5 hr hike from McGregor

The Boesmanskloof Hike was a lot harder than we thought particularly after a party on Friday 2nd October 2009.

Howard took us to this delightfull little place in Greyon for snack lunch. This picture was taken before the snack lunch just in case you are wondering
